5th Grade Jobs

One of the things I have really liked about the 5th grade program at my kids' school is all of the opportunities it gives kids to be of service to others and to work. This last year Grayson was an active member of the "Canoe Crew", serving in different capacities. I really like that they make the kids apply and interview for positions, and think about why they would want a particular job and what they have to contribute. Grayson's biggest responsibility was being a crossing guard one week out of each month. This meant being at school a little early and staying a little late. Since we live in Oregon it also meant a lot of mornings and afternoon spent standing out in the cold rain. Grayson also had two other jobs this year. He was a lunch buddy to a third grade boy who has issues with being a bully. This job meant Grayson gave up his recess once a week to eat lunch with his buddy and to try to be a positive example. I loved hearing Grayson's reports of some of their lunch time conversations. I think he took his job very seriously. He was also on "Way to Be" patrol, which involved walking the 3rd grade hall before school one day a week and handing out "Way to Be's" to kids who were making good choices. 5th grade was a great learning and growing time. I have been so impressed with the responsible young man that Grayson is becoming.
